Princess Brian

Greg's brother, Brian, graduated from BYU on Friday with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Yep, he's a genius. We're so proud to claim him!

As I was putting Garrett to bed the night before, I told him he needed to get lots of good sleep because the next day was going to be Uncle Brian's big day and we were going to celebrate with him. Garrett was pretty impressed and asked, "Is he going to be a princess?" Hahaha! (We've been to a few weddings this summer and all of the other times we've told him somebody is having a "big day" it's been for a wedding, so I guess that's what he was thinking. I laugh every time I think about it.

Abby was getting a bit bored during the ceremony, so we entertained her with a few snapshots.

The World's Greatest Cheering Section:

TA-DA! It's not quite a tiara and the "dress" is missing a few sequins, but Garrett was still pretty impressed. And that diploma Brian's holding is definitely better than a magic wand!

We ventured outside for some pictures and the kids found a golf cart to play in. (A big thanks to the BYU Soccer Team for leaving this cart lying around and sponsoring their post-graduation party. We couldn't have done it without you.)

The Phillips Siblings--minus Matt the Missionario and Surgeon Mike. They were all so proud of him!

Oops! There must have been a smudge or something on my camera lense. Greg is a bit blurry!

The newest Dr. Phillips and his awesome little family. Cathy deserves a double-doctorate for being such a champion wife and support to Brian over the past several years as he's been in school. It hasn't been easy, but she's such a trooper and they did it! Hooray for them!

We celebrated that evening with a really nice dinner for family and close friends. I was too busy stuffing myself with Tucano's to take pictures, but it was great. We had a massive slumber party at Grandpa and Grandma's house and then had a family outing to Hogle Zoo the next morning. It had been years since any of us had been to the zoo and it was so much fun!

They have a "Zoorassic Park" exhibit going on right now and have life-size dinosaurs displayed all around the zoo. They even move and make noise. Garrett LOVED them. Abby and Annabelle--not so much.

Here we are checking out a dinosaur. Abby just couldn't get enough...

The classic Hogle Zoo drinking fountain picture.

The elephants are so cool! This picture really isn't that cool, but you get the idea. The baby elephant is definitely the showstopper and I didn't even get a picture of her. What was I thinking???

At least I snapped this picture of Brian and Annabelle. She's cuter than a baby elephant, so it's all good.

They are adding on a new section to the zoo and Garrett was THRILLED when he saw the construction site. My mom asked him today what he saw at the zoo and he answered, "A bulldozer and an excavator." He liked the animals, but he LOVED the machinery. He would look at each animal for about 15 seconds and then say, "Let's go find another animal." We had to drag him away from this fence, so go figure.

The giraffes are always awesome to watch. Mal and I were overcome with its splendor and both said at the same time, "I could really use a giraffe handbag right about now..."

Awesome family pic--I think we'll send it out with our Christmas cards.

This is what we like to call the NRC. (Non-Reptile Club.) Yep, we waited outside while the rest of the crew looked at the scaly, slimy, slithery creatures. Uck--just thinking about it gives me the heebies-jeebies. (Greg did say Garrett absolutely loved it in there, so I'm glad he was able to go in. I'm even more glad I didn't have to.)

The kids loved the carousel and we may have even had a few fits thrown when it was time to get off.

The water-globe is another Hogle Zoo classic.

We had lots of fun riding the train.

Nice hair, huh? I think it's safe to say Abby had had it at this point and was literally pulling her hair out. Thank heavens for my rockin' dollar store sunglasses! They made such a fine distraction and totally saved the day. It was a big day for a little girl!

Later that night, Annabelle and Garrett cuddled up in Matt's old bed and watched "Monsters, Inc."

Eric and Gini brought some yummy ice cream to share. It was a big hit with the younger crowd--and the older one, too.

Here's the big moment for Dr. Brian. It's not the best video and gets a bit shaky at times--Abby was climbing on me and I almost dropped the camera. Congrats to Brian, we couldn't be prouder!
