We're Home!

We're home and doing well! Here are some pics from the past couple of days.

I love this picture. I took it the morning we left the hospital.
Getting ready to go home. Greg's family has a thing with bringing babies home from the hospital in BYU attire, so here it is!

Getting home and meeting big brother! We brought her home and got her settled in her swing before Garrett got here. We just decided to let him find her and see what happened. He walked in (eating a chunk of snow) and found her pretty quickly. He went right to her and said, "Baby Abby." It was really sweet.

Garrett even shared his snow and phone with her. We'd say their first meeting was a smashing success.
Snug as a bug and ready for bed.
Garrett woke up this morning and came right into our room calling for Abby. He's pretty intrigued with her and likes to hold her (for about a minute). Garrett is getting adjusted to having a new little person around. He's been pretty good about staying out of trouble while we're taking care of Abby.
Abby got to go swimming today for the first time when Garrett spilled the whole container of water on her while we were giving her a sponge bath. She handled it surprisingly well and was wide awake for the rest of the afternoon.
Spending some quality time with daddy and big brother.

Playing dress-up with this little gal is just too much fun!

She's Here!

NOTE: We are about 90% sure we are naming her Abigail, but the name is still subject to change. I decided to post it anyways and "try it out" for a bit. :)
Sweet little Abby joined our family on Tuesday, January 26 at 8:32 AM. She was 7 pounds even and 19.5 inches long. She has lots of dark hair and the cutest little face (we're not at all biased). Most people say she looks like Garrett when he was a newborn. Obviously, we are absolutely thrilled with her! Due to the swine flu, our hospital doesn't allow children under the age of 14 in unless they are patients, so Garrett hasn't been able to meet his little sister yet. We are going home in the morning and are so excited for the two of them to meet!
For those who care (mostly women who have had children and probably my MD brother-in-law), here's the lovely story.
I visited the doctor Monday afternoon. I was dilated to a 4, 80% effaced, her head was way down (unusual for a 2nd baby), and my bag of water was still bulging. He basically said I was just waiting to go into labor and said he wanted to induce me on Wednesday if I hadn't already her by then. I told him I really wanted to go into labor on my own, but we would think about it and let him know. He asked me if I wanted him to strip my membranes and I told him to go for it. He told me I would likely experience some pretty good cramping and sent me on my way, saying he was 80% sure he would be seeing me soon. (I guess I didn't realize what "soon" meant.)
I went home and was doing fine. A little cramping, but nothing major. We went to bed about midnight and the cramps started getting worse, but I was able to somewhat sleep through them. I woke up about every half hour or so, but was able to go back to sleep. At about 4:00 AM, the cramps got bad enough I couldn't sleep and had to get out of bed. I got on the internet and tried to research how I could figure out the difference between cramps and contractions, but I didn't really find anything that seemed to fit how I was feeling. I called the Labor & Delivery floor at the hospital and the nurse told me it was most likely just cramping and to get a big drink of water, walk around for awhile, lie back down, and see if they stopped. I did what she said and was lying in bed when I was hit with what I know now was a pretty painful contraction. I got up again and walked around and had another one a few minutes later. They started coming every few minutes and were intensifying in pain, so I called my mom at about 5:30 and told her what was going on. She said we better hurry and get to the hospital. I woke Greg up and we grabbed Garrett to drop him off at my parents' house. By the time we got to their house, the contractions were coming about every 3 minutes and were starting to get really painful.
Greg was still half asleep and was not driving as fast as I would have liked (ironic because I'm always telling him to slow down), so I had to ask him kindly (or not really that kindly) to please speed it up a bit. Luckily the weather was good, so we booked it to the hospital. Greg even ran two red lights--I've never been more grateful for anything in my life. :) We got to the hospital at a little after 6:00 AM and the contractions were coming strong. We got checked in and it seemed like it took forever for the nurse's aide to get me to my room and settled. I was planning on getting a picture of me in all my glory so I would have one to document me at 9 months pregnant, but I could barely stand up at that point, so I just got the gown on and got in the bed.
The aide finally got all the monitors hooked up to me and I asked her how soon I could get an epidural. She informed me it would probably be awhile because the anesthesiologist was just going into a C-section (which would occupy him for awhile) and they still had to examine me and see if I was really in labor. If I was in labor, they would have to get an IV started and at least one bag of fluids in me before they could even start the epidural. I consider myself to generally be a
really nice person, but I probably would have kicked her if I could have moved.
The nurse finally came in, took one look at me, and asked me if I was going to want an epidural. I said, "Yes, PLEASE!" and she got right to work. She quickly examined me and I was dilated to a 7! She said the end would probably come fast, but they were going to try to get the epidural in and hold me off because my doctor just happened to be the one doing the C-section. Thankfully, another anethesiologist was supposed to be coming on shift at 7:00 AM and had just barely called to see if he should come in early. They told him to come fast and he was there within minutes. (I'm thinking he must live in the hospital parking lot or something.) I will admit I was not doing too hot at this point. The contractions were only about a minute apart and were getting worse each time. (Keep in mind with Garrett that my water broke, but I had absolutely no contractions and was barely dilated. They started me on Pitocin and gave me my epidural at about the same time, so there wasn't much pain involved with the contractions in that labor. I was in labor for about 12 hours with him and did have to push for over 2 hours, so it wasn't a cakewalk, but it was nothing like this.) Anyways, he got the epidural in and the relief was wonderful--I could have kissed him! (Kudos to anybody who actually CHOOSES to have a baby without an epidural. You're tougher than me. And maybe partially crazy???)
At that point, the baby was ready to come, but they held me off for about 45 more minutes while the doctor finished the C-section. At about 8:00 AM, they started getting all the equipment ready for the delivery and said the doctor would be in shortly and he would break my water and deliver the baby. I was like, "It can't be that easy," and they told me not to jinx myself. The doctor came in a few minutes later, broke my water, I pushed about 5 times, and out she came! The cord was wrapped around her neck, but they got if off and suctioned out her mouth and she cried almost immediately. We were shocked at all of her dark hair--definitely expecting another redhead!
We're all doing great! The recovery from 5 minutes of pushing has been much easier than it was with the 2+ hours I did with Garrett. The doctor told me a few weeks ago, "Second babies are why people have thirds," and I would definitely agree. I feel really good and am looking forward to going home in the morning and figuring out how we are going to swing it with two kids. Any advice??? :)
***More pictures to come tomorrow (or sometime soon)!!!

Not Soon...

I asked Garrett tonight, "When is your baby sister going to come? Soon or not soon?" His response, "Not soon."

Funny Little Fella...

No baby yet, but that's all right with us. We've had a good week and have tried really hard to focus on spending some quality time with Garrett. He is so funny and has such a cute little personality. Here are some of my fave pics from this week:

Hanging out in the laundry basket.
He has discovered a new favorite "hiding" place.

Yesterday dumped about a foot of snow in our neck of the woods. Garrett loved being on "snow removal duty" with his dad and came in eating a snowball. It started getting too cold in his hand and was really bugging him, so we put it in a bowl. As soon as it was gone, he grabbed my hand and took me to the door to refill his snow bowl. I'm not sure how many times we filled up his bowl, but the little guy consumed A LOT of snow yesterday!
A new nightly ritual...Garrett and Greg watching THEIR favorite movie before bedtime and having a few snacks. I say "their" because I think Greg likes 101 Dalmatians almost as much as Garrett does. :)
Just looking for a snack...

Signs of the Times...

I went to the grocery store this evening. As I finished loading the bags in the car, I noticed an item in the very back of the cart I had forgotten to pay for. Like an idiot, I stood there in the parking lot just staring at it and wondering what in the world I was going to do. I considered all my options--leave it in the cart, just take it and pay for it next time, go to the pharmacy drive-through and see if they would let me pay for it there. I'm not kidding when I say I probably stood there for a good minute in despair just trying to decide what to do.

This experience I would call a "Sign of the Times." (I'm referring to the "9 Month Pregnant Times".) Under normal circumstances, I would have thought, "Oh crap," and marched right back into the store and paid for the item. (Or I probably wouldn't have forgotten to pay for it to begin with.) No big deal. Not today! After agonizing for awhile, I did manage to waddle back in and pay for the stupid thing so I could leave with a clear conscience, but it about did me in.

To be honest, I would have just left the stupid thing in the cart, but it was the whole reason I had gone to the store to begin with. Oh yes, here it is!!!It has been weeks since I fell asleep before 3 AM and slept for more than just a few hours, so I am really looking forward to taking these bad boys tonight. I visited the doctor today and told him about my insomnia and he suggested these. Let's pray they work! At least one good night of sleep before the baby is born would be absolutely heavenly.

Other highlights from the doc--I'm now dilated to a 3+, 80% effaced and my water is bulging and just ready to break. I have measured small for two weeks in a row now and they did an ultrasound just to make sure she is still growing and everything is okay. Thankfully, everything looks fine and the doctor said she is ready to come anytime now, but I'm reminding myself we still have 2 weeks until my due date and not to get too excited. In fact, I'm really hoping she doesn't come tonight, because I'm really hoping it was worth the trip back into the grocery store to pay for the blasted meds so I can sleep!!!

And just for fun--here's my favorite boys snuggling up for a little movie party before bedtime. Anybody who has spent time with Garrett lately knows exactly what they were watching...

The Latest and Greatest...

Last Saturday we went to the Desert Star Theater with Greg's family. We go at least once a year and it is always a blast. This particular show was dedicated to making fun of Twilight (not really Twilight as much as the people who are obsessed with it). It was hilarious and I got quite a few good chuckles in, mostly just because the main characters reminded me so much of my former students who were constantly talking about Edward and falling in love with a vampire.

The only picture we happened to take at the theater was this one of Eric. I figured I better post it. :)
While we were at the theater, my brother Brian and his wife Sher watched Garrett for us. They gave him the royal treatment and took him to the zoo and then out to lunch. It must have been one of the finer days of his young life, because he has been talking about "B Sher" all week. Every time he sees an animal on TV, in a book, or anywhere, he'll start saying "B Sher" and repeat it over and over. It's pretty funny.

He was so exhausted from his day of fun he fell asleep on the couch at Grandma and Grandpa's house watching his favorite movie, "The Doggies." (Also known as "101 Dalmatians.") Garrett is talking up a storm these days and is so much fun. He repeats just about everything we say and amazes us with the new words he comes up with and the things he remembers and connects. Oh how we love our little Buster!

Cousin Gracie came to visit while her mom was helping work at our house. Garrett and "Gracea" (as he calls her) snuggled up on the couch to watch, what else??? "The Doggies."
We were at the new house today and I actually remembered my camera. It's still hard to get a good picture of anything, but I tried.

Here's Garrett being so helpful and playing in a bucket of garbage.
My little brother Brett and his wife "Selsa" (Garrett talk for Chelsea) have been working pretty much around the clock at the house. It seems like they're always there working and when we pull in the driveway of the new house, Garrett usually says "Bett Selsa" because he knows he'll likely be seeing them.
Not a great pic, but here's the living room.
Garrett is heading downstairs to do some masking and taping. Again, he is such a HUGE help whenever we visit the house. :)
Here's the front entryway. I LOVE the way these columns turned out.
When we were planning our house, I told Greg all I wanted was a library. And since I always get everything I want (haha), here it is!
Greg's sister Mal painting/working it on the phone.

"Selsa" just painting away!
We have had so much help at the house and are so, so grateful to everybody who has helped. I just happened to get pictures of these folks today, but there have been many, many more who have given up hours of their time to help us and we will be forever grateful!!!

Finishing a house while 9 months pregnant has been an interesting experience. Between Garrett and being pregnant, it's been difficult not being able to help as much as I would like. The general consensus has been that I make a better babysitter/food provider than a worker, but it's hard to watch everybody slaving away on our house while I stand there like an idiot. I've been so pleased with the way everything has turned out and everybody has done such a great job! We're still a few weeks out, but it's moving right along and I am getting so excited!

In other news--I am now considered "full-term" and the baby could come anytime. I was dilated to a 3 and 70% effaced at my appointment on Wednesday, so the doctor said I'm ready whenever, but he is really hoping I will make it at least one more week. That really spurred me into action and I finally got my bag packed and tried to get semi-organized. We will likely have a few weeks in our apartment with her before we move into our new house, so I'm just doing what we need to do to get by. It's going to be a wild ride the next month or so, but we're saddling up and ready to go! YEEHAW!!! :)

INSOMNIA

I remember hearing a pregnant girl say, "I can't wait for this baby to come so I can get some sleep." Everybody in the room who had kids laughed and informed her she probably wouldn't be getting much more sleep when the baby comes. I don't remember everything about Garrett's newborn days (they are kind of an exhausted blur), but I don't think I was getting any less sleep than I am now.

Between restless legs, bathroom breaks about every 20 minutes, itchy skin, and shooting pain in my back down my legs every time I roll over, sleep is kind of a thing of the past. It seems like the past week or so I have finally fallen asleep (usually on the couch watching TV) between 2 and 5 AM.

Don't get me wrong--I'm certainly not complaining (although it sounds like it). Each miserable night gets us one day closer to meeting our little gal! We're getting so excited for her to join us. As of tomorrow, I will be 37 weeks and therefore full-term. I doubt she'll be coming 3 weeks early, but we're getting there. Stay tuned!

Self-Esteem Booster For a Pregnant Lady

Here's a sampling of a conversation that happened today between Greg and Brooklyn, our 5-year old niece. (Greg was talking about some heavy things he had moved.)

Brooklyn: "You're really strong. Do you think you could carry a whole house?"
Greg: "Sure. I could probably lift two houses."
Brooklyn: "Wow." (Pauses and thinks for a minute.) "Do you think you could even carry Nat?"

A Snowy Saturday

At the end of the day, Greg said to me, "That sure was fun pulling the kids around on the sled today." By "kids" he meant Garrett and his 22-year old sister Mallory. Love ya, Mal Pal. Thanks for coming to visit!

Other highlights: While we were out playing, Greg and his dad were building stairs to go from the house into the garage. They look fantastic. Thanks guys for the manual labor. I love being a woman!

I got a bit crazy and got the four-wheeler stuck. OOPS! I went to get Greg and told him, "I kind of got stuck." He laughed at me and said, "You kind of got stuck, or you did get stuck?" "Just kind of," I answered. (It took a truck and a chain to get us kind of unstuck.) It worked out great for Little G, though, because Mal took this opportunity to teach him all about the wonders of eating snow. He's now an addict. He stopped today to pick up a handful of muddy snow from Greg's boots that was on the stairs and Greg got it right before it went in his mouth. YUM!
