The speed dials on my phone:
1. Voicemail
2. Greg
3. My mom
4. My sister
5. My dad
6. Poison Control (Not really, but probably should be after this week.)
I am so proud to report I made my second call this week to poison control. The first one was a few days ago when Garrett was helping Greg outside and decided the ice melt looked just too delicious not to eat. The second one was tonight when Garrett took a swig of rubbing alcohol (he thought it was water.)
Usually when I feed Abby and Greg isn't home, I put Garrett in his high chair with some snacks and turn on a movie. (I'm an awesome mom, I know. So glad I'm teaching my kid at such a young age to veg in front of the TV while eating. Fabulous! This high chair/TV time came by necessity as Garrett was using Abby's frequent mealtimes to crawl in the oven, empty the garbage, "wash" the dishes," etc.)
Garrett had already spent a considerable amount of high chair time today while I did some much-needed cleaning, so I thought he would be okay to be down for just a few minutes while I fed Abby. WRONG! He opened the fridge (we put latches on the fridge after Garrett climbed in it a few times, but I must have forgotten to latch it this time) and I heard him say "Yummy water." I figured he was just getting a water bottle and I was getting up to get him when he set the bottle down and said, "Yucky." Sure enough, his "yummy water" was actually rubbing alcohol. Fabulous!
According to the nice folks at the Poison Control Center, neither rock salt or rubbing alcohol is usually a problem for kids because they both taste so disgusting that they are rarely swallowed. PHEW! I did, however, learn that rubbing alcohol is VERY intoxicating--much more so than regular alcoholic beverages--so you might want to give it a shot if you're looking for a cheap buzz.
I was mortified at the end of the call when he asked for my contact information and realized they had asked the same questions last time. Super! My name has probably been added to the list of nominations for the "Mother of the Year" award. What can I say? I rock.
This is a lovely shot of the side of his head, but the look of mischief on his little face has been quite perfectly captured.

Oh Nat. you are being entirely too hard on yourself! You are such a great mom! And I think if you are mother to a very crazy little 2 year old and you don't make at least a couple of calls to poison control you may want to start worrying that he isn't getting into enough trouble! Gotta love that little Monster!
Well, even though I've never had to call poison control, I still don't think you're a bad mom!! Okay, maybe just a little bit...but I'm glad Garrett's okay. (Come to think of it, my kids have eaten rock salt, but I didn't think to call poison control about it.)
Don't feel bad Natalie...at least you are aware of what he has done and you call poisoin control right away to make sure he will be OK...there are probably SO many kids who get into stuff and the parents don't even know. You are a very attentive and good mother. I had to call poison control once for Carson because instead of a children's chewable Tylenol, I accidentally gave him an adult tylenol tablet....I was wondering why he acted like it tasted so gross....so at least you weren't the one who gave the poison to your child like I did!
I too have had to make way to many calls to poison control. One time when I called, the guy said, "was this your son, Cole, who ate the deodorant." I was sure that DCFS would be knocking on my door. Oh well, better safe than sorry, right?
I have also called poisen control twice in the past 6 months. So we know rock salt and rubbing alcohol rarely get swallowed- and Gracie took one of brooklyn's alergy pills that was ok and she ate gel things that come in shoe boxes and that was ok too- So 4 things we won't have to call about again. :) What will we do with these kids?
I must say that your post had me cracking up! I can just relate on so many levels. It is so hard trying to feed a new baby while having a very active toddler running around. I loved your picture of Garrett in front of the TV because that picture could have been taken in our house...with Bella instead of Garrett in front of the TV, of course :) TV has become a necessity in our house too! Even though I don't get to see you in action, I know that you are a great mom to your cute kids. They are lucky to have you.
Oh Nat, that's too funny! I too have called twice, and felt the same way, like I was on some black list or something ;)
(I admit too, the TV has been nice for those frequent feedings)
I can just see these kind of shenanigans in my future! oh boy! I hope I handle them half as well as you, hehehe.
Oh my gosh...don't you worry! I've beaten your number of calls by let's say ummm....quadruple the amount (actually most likely way more than that). They always ask me for my name and number at the end and I want to hurry and hang up on them so they don't know it's me. I'm starting to wonder if there's only one person that works there because I always get this same guy and his names "Mike" everytime and his voice is the same...so embarrassing! Anwways I'm glad little Garrett is okay. Do you think he'd want to come play with Easton sometime? And I want to see more pics of that cute little girl of yours!
